What is Required to Get an Electric Contractor License in California?

California Contractor Law

Becoming an electrical contractor in California requires a significant commitment to education, training, and a rigorous licensing process. The license you’ll need is the C-10 Electrical Contractor license, which is issued by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). This is a separate and distinct process from the electrician certification issued by the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), which allows you to work as an electrician for a C-10 licensed contractor.

C-10 License

To qualify for the C-10 license, you must meet several key requirements:

  • Experience:

You must have at least four years of full-time, journey-level experience in the electrical trade within the last 10 years. This experience can be verified by a qualified individual, such as a supervisor or employer. Your education in a related field (like electrical engineering or construction management) may count for up to three years of this experience.

  • Application:

You’ll need to submit a comprehensive application to the CSLB, including a non-refundable fee. As part of this process, you will also be required to undergo a criminal background check via Live Scan fingerprinting.

  • Examinations:

Once your application is approved, you must pass two separate examinations:

    • The C-10 Trade Exam: This test covers a wide range of electrical knowledge, including planning, rough and finish wiring, troubleshooting, and safety.
    • The Law and Business Exam: This exam assesses your knowledge of business management, contracts, employment requirements, insurance, and other legal and business aspects of running a contracting company.
    • Insurance and Bonding: After passing the exams, you must meet bonding and insurance requirements. This includes obtaining a contractor’s bond and, if you have employees, securing worker’s compensation insurance.

The CSLB provides detailed information and forms on their website, and many schools offer preparatory courses to help applicants with the exams. This structured process ensures that all licensed electrical contractors in California possess the necessary experience, technical knowledge, and business acumen to operate safely and effectively.
