I had to call for an electrician this afternoon as we had the power going off in several rooms of the house. I was given Anthony Orozco's card from another business who happened to be here. Anthony got back with me right away and within 20 minutes he was at my house. It was Friday and after 2pm. He had to replace a circuit breaker in one of our panels. I was so impressed that he was able to come out on a Friday afternoon, complete the work, and be so professional and courteous. I will definitely recommend Good Neighbors Electric to everyone.

I called Good Neighbor Electric in the morning to get a quote for the insulation of my Electric Vehicle (EV)charger. My EV charger requires a 100 AMP circuit and I wasn’t sure if my panel had the capacity for it. Anthony came out to the house that afternoon to check out the electrical panel, EV charger, and site. I received a quote the next day. After obtaining competitive quotes from other companies I found Good Neighbor Electric to be the best price. We scheduled the installation for the following week. Anthony’s people showed up on time and were very professional and courteous. During the installation Anthony came out to inspect and oversee the job. I couldn’t be happier with the installation, my charger looks good on the wall and is working flawlessly. I highly recommend Good Neighbor Electric for your electrical needs and I will be using them in the future.

Needed Tony to help me out with a remodel of my sister's medical office in SLO. We had our time line pushed up and I needed 50 data drops pulled by tomorrow, before insulation and drywall started. Tony got his crew together and saved the day! He ran ~3k' of Cat6 in two trips. Time was of the essence but he still managed to make it neat and presentable. We couldn't be happier with Good Neighbors Electric!

Tony, Skyler, Eli, and Adam were phenomenal! Setting up a big, new 200 Amp panel to replace an ancient 50 Amp panel, and all that goes with that for a 70-year old house, whew!! The team is happy, fast, upbeat, and creative. I believe there's nothing they can't do! New she-shed wired up, garage tricked out, and house safe and sound, thank you Tony and team, you are a wonderful group, we enjoyed every minute. And that's saying a lot when it comes to construction! To top it off, Good Neighbors Electric quoted a very fair price, arranged permitting and inspections, and went the extra mile to accommodate last minute ideas. 😊 Thank you, thank you, we will wholeheartedly refer you to everyone!

Anthony and his crew were amazing! First of all, he was able to come over the same day I contacted him to see the job and get started on a quote. I’d been given the runaround from other companies, so working with Anthony was like a sweet relief. Job was finished perfectly the following week & they even fixed a couple extra switches that were wired funky by a previous electrician. I will definitely be calling Good Neighbors Electric for all my future needs and recommending them to everyone I know! Thanks again guys!

Our Generator Installation Service in Atascadero, CA

Generator installation begins with sizing the unit for your specific loads. We perform a load calculation that totals the equipment you want to power during outages. Whole-house standby generators handle everything in a typical home, with capacity reflecting the total demand. Smaller generators handle essential loads like refrigeration, heating, lighting, and a few outlets. The right size depends on your priorities and your budget. We help you balance capacity against cost.

Generator placement requires careful consideration. Standby generators need adequate clearance from windows, doors, and ventilation openings to prevent exhaust intrusion. The pad location should support the generator weight and provide drainage. Distance from the home affects fuel line length and electrical conductor runs. We work with you to find a location that meets code requirements while fitting your property layout.

Fuel supply is the foundation of standby generator performance. Natural gas provides convenient supply for homes with existing service. Propane works for properties without natural gas, with tank sizing matched to expected runtime. The fuel line from the source to the generator must meet code requirements for materials, sizing, and installation. We coordinate with gas providers and licensed plumbers as needed for fuel work.

Transfer switches handle the critical job of switching loads between utility power and generator output. Automatic transfer switches detect outages and start the generator without intervention. Manual transfer switches require you to operate them during outages, which is fine for portable generator systems. Service-rated transfer switches handle the entire home, while non-service-rated switches handle selected circuits. We install the right type for your specific situation.

Conductor sizing matches the generator capacity and the run length. The conductors from the generator to the transfer switch must handle the full generator output. From the transfer switch to the panel, conductors handle the loads being transferred. Voltage drop on longer runs may require upsizing conductors. We calculate sizes correctly to ensure reliable operation under load.

Code compliance affects every aspect of generator installation. The 2020 National Electrical Code introduced specific requirements for outdoor generator equipment, including disconnect switches and equipment bonding. Local jurisdictions may add requirements beyond the national code. We stay current with code requirements and design installations that meet them. The inspection process verifies compliance.

Battery and starting systems need attention during installation. Standby generators typically have batteries that need to be active before initial start. We commission the generator, perform the first start, and verify all systems work correctly. Subsequent maintenance, including periodic exercise runs, can be configured during commissioning. Documentation of the start procedure and maintenance schedule is provided.

Final commissioning verifies the entire system works correctly. We test the automatic start function by simulating a power outage. The transfer switch is verified to operate correctly in both directions. Loads are tested under generator power to confirm capacity is adequate. The generator is run for the manufacturer’s recommended initial run time. Documentation of the testing results becomes part of your records. Good Neighbors Electric leaves you with a tested, working generator ready to handle outages.

Why Hire A Licensed Electrician For Your Generator Installation Service

Generator installation involves significant electrical work, gas piping coordination, and code compliance that require professional expertise. Improper installation creates serious safety hazards, including back-feed to utility lines that can injure utility workers. Licensed electricians understand transfer switch requirements, conductor sizing, and the code rules that protect everyone. We carry insurance that protects you if something goes wrong on the job. Our work meets the California Electrical Code and the manufacturer’s installation requirements, which keeps your warranty valid. Good Neighbors Electric brings field experience to every generator installation. Anthony Orozco trains every electrician on the latest generator technology and code updates. You get a 2-year workmanship warranty, a waived dispatch fee when you proceed, and a team that respects your home throughout the project. Improperly installed generators cause back-feed accidents, fires, and equipment damage. Professional installation is the only safe path for backup power equipment.

Most Common Generator Installation Questions

Generator installation provides backup power during outages, with sizing, placement, fuel supply, and transfer equipment all factored into the project. Below are the questions Atascadero homeowners ask most often before scheduling service.

Generator sizing depends on the loads you want to power during outages. Whole-house generators handle every load in a typical home, with capacity sized for the total demand. Most homes need 18 to 26 kilowatts for whole-house coverage, depending on size and equipment. Larger homes with extensive HVAC, pool equipment, or other major loads need larger generators.

Selected-load generators cover essential equipment without handling everything. Refrigeration, heating systems, basic lighting, and a few outlets typically require 8 to 14 kilowatts. The trade-off is lower cost but reduced functionality during outages. We discuss your priorities during the estimate to find the right balance for your situation.

Future loads deserve consideration during sizing. EV charging, expanding HVAC, or planned additions all affect the demand. Sizing the generator for current loads only may leave you short if your needs grow. Adding capacity during initial installation is much cheaper than upgrading later. Good Neighbors Electric helps you think through these factors. The right size today supports your home for the long term.

Generator installation costs depend on the generator size, the fuel supply, and the installation complexity. Whole-house standby generators with automatic transfer switches represent the largest projects. Smaller selected-load generators cost less due to smaller equipment and simpler transfer switching. Portable generator inlets with manual transfer switches are the most affordable option.

Fuel supply work adds to the project cost when new gas service or propane tanks are needed. Existing natural gas service that can be extended to the generator location is the most cost-effective scenario. New propane tanks, including the tank purchase and underground installation if desired, add significant cost. We coordinate fuel work as part of the project planning.

Financing makes generator projects practical for more families. Spreading the cost over manageable payments preserves your budget. We discuss financing during the estimate. The dispatch fee is waived when you proceed, and the 2-year workmanship warranty applies to every installation. Good Neighbors Electric is committed to fair pricing. The investment in backup power protects your home and family during outages.

Portable generators are wheeled units that you move into position during outages. They run on gasoline or propane from portable tanks. You connect them to the home through an inlet box and transfer switch, then start them manually when power goes out. Portable generators are less expensive but require you to be present and physically able to operate them.

Standby generators are permanently installed outdoor units that start automatically during outages. They run on natural gas or propane from permanent fuel sources. The automatic transfer switch handles the switching from utility to generator power without intervention. Standby generators are more expensive but provide hands-off operation, including starting in the middle of the night when needed.

The right choice depends on your priorities. Portable generators work for occasional short outages when you can be home to operate them. Standby generators work for households where automatic operation matters, especially when outages happen while you are away or asleep. Good Neighbors Electric installs both types and helps you decide based on your specific situation. Each has its place.

Whole-house generators are sized to power every load in a typical home simultaneously. The generator capacity must handle the largest expected load combination, which depends on home size and equipment. Most modern homes need 18 to 26 kilowatts for whole-house coverage, with larger homes needing more.

Some homeowners choose smaller generators that power most of the home but require management of major loads. Air conditioning, electric heat, and large appliances might be staggered rather than running simultaneously. Smart load management systems handle this automatically by shedding loads when generator capacity is approached. We discuss these options during the estimate.

The trade-off between full capacity and managed loads affects cost significantly. Smaller generators with load management cost less but require more attention during use. Whole-house generators with full capacity cost more but provide complete normal operation during outages. Good Neighbors Electric helps you weigh these options. Your situation determines the right approach.

Most generator installations complete in two to four days. The timeline includes site preparation, generator placement, fuel line installation, electrical connections, and commissioning. We arrive prepared with the materials needed and coordinate the various trades involved. Communication during the project keeps everyone informed.

Site preparation often happens on a separate day from the rest of the work. The concrete pad needs time to cure, and underground utilities need to be located before any excavation. Fuel work by licensed plumbers may also happen separately. We coordinate these activities to minimize total project duration while respecting necessary cure times and safety procedures.

Inspections fit into the project timeline. Both electrical and gas inspections may be required, depending on the scope of work. We schedule inspections to minimize delays in commissioning your generator. Good Neighbors Electric manages the entire project so you can focus on your daily life. The result is a properly installed generator without unnecessary stress.

Yes, generator installations require permits in Atascadero and across San Luis Obispo County. The local jurisdiction follows the California Electrical Code, which mandates permits for new branch circuits, transfer switches, and panel modifications. Gas work for fuel supply requires separate permits. Inspections verify code compliance, which protects insurance and warranty coverage.

Good Neighbors Electric handles the electrical permit process as part of every installation. Gas permits are typically handled by the licensed plumber doing the fuel work, with coordination from us. The customer experience is straightforward, with no paperwork burden on you. The inspection records become part of your home’s permanent documentation.

Some neighborhoods have homeowners association requirements that affect generator placement and screening. We help identify these requirements during the planning phase. The permit process and any HOA review happen before installation begins. Good Neighbors Electric makes the entire process manageable.

Properly installed generators with quality transfer switches do not damage appliances. The transfer switch ensures clean transitions between utility and generator power, with no harmful spikes or dropouts. Modern generators produce stable voltage and frequency that meets the requirements of sensitive electronics. The combination of quality equipment and proper installation protects your appliances during outages.

Older generator technology and improperly installed systems can cause problems. Open-frame generators without proper voltage regulation produce unstable power that damages sensitive electronics. Backfeeding through outlet connections without transfer switches creates safety hazards and can damage equipment. We avoid all of these issues through proper equipment selection and installation.

Smart generators offer additional features that protect appliances and improve performance. Some models include surge protection, automatic load management, and smart connectivity for monitoring. The investment in quality equipment pays off through reliable operation and equipment protection. Good Neighbors Electric installs equipment that meets these standards.

Generators require regular maintenance to ensure reliable operation when needed. Annual professional inspections check fuel system integrity, electrical connections, and starting performance. Oil changes and filter replacements happen on schedules based on operating hours. Battery testing and replacement maintain reliable starting. We can coordinate with generator service providers for ongoing maintenance.

Periodic exercise runs keep the generator ready for service. Most standby generators automatically run for several minutes weekly to circulate fluids and verify operation. The exercise schedule can be configured during commissioning to fit your preferences. The brief weekly run ensures the generator starts reliably when an actual outage happens.

Storage and cleanliness affect generator longevity. Keeping the generator clear of debris, vegetation, and pest intrusion supports reliable operation. The intake and exhaust must remain unobstructed for proper combustion. Good Neighbors Electric provides guidance on maintenance during installation, with referrals to qualified service providers when needed. The investment in proper maintenance pays off through reliable backup power for many years.
