I had to call for an electrician this afternoon as we had the power going off in several rooms of the house. I was given Anthony Orozco's card from another business who happened to be here. Anthony got back with me right away and within 20 minutes he was at my house. It was Friday and after 2pm. He had to replace a circuit breaker in one of our panels. I was so impressed that he was able to come out on a Friday afternoon, complete the work, and be so professional and courteous. I will definitely recommend Good Neighbors Electric to everyone.

I called Good Neighbor Electric in the morning to get a quote for the insulation of my Electric Vehicle (EV)charger. My EV charger requires a 100 AMP circuit and I wasn’t sure if my panel had the capacity for it. Anthony came out to the house that afternoon to check out the electrical panel, EV charger, and site. I received a quote the next day. After obtaining competitive quotes from other companies I found Good Neighbor Electric to be the best price. We scheduled the installation for the following week. Anthony’s people showed up on time and were very professional and courteous. During the installation Anthony came out to inspect and oversee the job. I couldn’t be happier with the installation, my charger looks good on the wall and is working flawlessly. I highly recommend Good Neighbor Electric for your electrical needs and I will be using them in the future.

Needed Tony to help me out with a remodel of my sister's medical office in SLO. We had our time line pushed up and I needed 50 data drops pulled by tomorrow, before insulation and drywall started. Tony got his crew together and saved the day! He ran ~3k' of Cat6 in two trips. Time was of the essence but he still managed to make it neat and presentable. We couldn't be happier with Good Neighbors Electric!

Our Ground Mounted Solar Systems Service in Atascadero, CA

Ground mount projects start with site evaluation. The location needs adequate sun exposure throughout the day, with minimal shading from trees, structures, or terrain. South-facing slopes work well, though level sites with proper tilt also perform. Soil conditions affect the foundation type, with rocky soil sometimes requiring different mounting solutions than soft ground. We evaluate these factors during initial consultation.

System sizing reflects your energy use and goals. We review utility bills to understand your annual consumption and seasonal patterns. The system can be sized to offset all your electricity use, just the highest-cost peak hours, or anything in between. Battery backup adds resilience during outages but increases cost. We help you balance production goals against budget during the planning phase.

Equipment selection affects production and reliability. Solar panels from major manufacturers like REC, Q Cells, LG, and Panasonic offer different efficiency and warranty levels. Inverters from Enphase, SolarEdge, SMA, and others have different features and reliability profiles. Mounting systems from manufacturers like IronRidge and Schletter provide structural support designed for outdoor environments. We discuss equipment options during the estimate.

DC wiring connects panels to inverters. The wiring must handle the array output current, with proper sizing for the conductor length. Module-level electronics, like microinverters or DC optimizers, mount at each panel and reduce shading effects on production. Conduit protects DC wiring from physical damage and environmental exposure. We use proper materials and installation techniques for long-term reliability.

Inverter installation handles the conversion from DC to AC for use in the home. String inverters serve groups of panels, while microinverters work at each panel. Hybrid inverters integrate battery backup capability for energy storage systems. The inverter location balances proximity to the array against electrical and weather considerations. We choose locations that meet code requirements while supporting reliable operation.

Interconnection to the home electrical system follows code and utility requirements. The connection point at the main panel requires proper breaker space and wiring. Larger systems may require service upgrades to support the interconnection. PG&E approval is required for grid-tied systems, with specific application processes. We handle the utility coordination as part of the project.

Trenching and conduit work connect the array to the inverter and the inverter to the panel when distances require it. Underground conductors require proper depth, conduit type, and pull box installation. Direct burial cable is acceptable for some applications, while conduit is required for others. We follow code requirements for each specific situation.

Final commissioning verifies the entire system works correctly. We test the DC voltage and current, verify inverter operation, and confirm production at the meter. Monitoring systems are configured during commissioning to provide real-time production data through smartphone apps. Documentation of the installation, including utility paperwork and equipment specifications, is provided for your records. Good Neighbors Electric leaves you with a working solar system ready to produce energy for decades.

Why Hire A Licensed Electrician For Your Ground Mounted Solar Systems Service

Solar installations involve significant electrical work, code compliance, and utility coordination that require professional expertise. The DC voltages from solar arrays can be high enough to cause serious injury, and proper safety procedures matter throughout the installation. Licensed electricians understand the National Electrical Code requirements specific to solar, including rapid shutdown, equipment grounding, and disconnect requirements. We carry insurance that protects you if something goes wrong on the job. Our work meets the California Electrical Code and PG&E interconnection standards, which keeps your warranty valid and your interconnection approved. Good Neighbors Electric brings field experience to solar installations across Atascadero. Anthony Orozco trains every electrician on solar code and best practices. You get a 2-year workmanship warranty, a waived dispatch fee when you proceed, and a team that respects your property throughout the project. Improper solar installations cause fires, equipment damage, and interconnection problems. Professional installation is the only safe path for systems that interact with the utility grid.

Most Common Ground Mounted Solar Systems Questions

Ground mounted solar systems use land area rather than roof space for solar production, with mounting structures, electrical equipment, and grid interconnection all part of the installation. Below are the questions Atascadero homeowners ask most often before scheduling service.

Ground mounted systems offer several advantages compared to roof installations. Optimal orientation and tilt are easier to achieve on the ground, with no constraint from existing roof angles. Production can be 10 to 25 percent higher with ideal orientation and tilt. Maintenance access is much easier without roof work, which simplifies cleaning, monitoring, and any repairs needed.

Roof preservation is another significant benefit. Ground mounts avoid roof penetrations that can leak over time. Roof replacement, when needed, does not require system removal and reinstallation. Older roofs that would need replacement before solar can take ground mounted systems immediately. The trade-off is that ground mounts require open land and visible from the property.

System size flexibility favors ground mounts in some situations. Large systems can exceed available roof area, but ground mounts have no such limit on properties with adequate land. Adding capacity later is easier with ground mounts since the existing array can extend with new sections. Good Neighbors Electric helps you weigh the trade-offs during planning. The right choice depends on your specific property and goals.

Land requirements depend on system size and the specific equipment used. A typical 5 kilowatt system needs roughly 400 to 600 square feet of array area, plus space around the array for access and shading clearance. Larger systems scale up proportionally, with 10 kilowatts needing 800 to 1200 square feet and so on.

Tracking systems that follow the sun throughout the day need more space than fixed arrays because of the rotation clearance. Tracking systems also produce more energy per panel but cost more in equipment and maintenance. Most residential ground mounts use fixed mounting for simplicity and reliability. We discuss these options during planning.

The land beyond the array itself matters too. Setbacks from property lines, structures, and easements all affect available area. Vegetation management around the array prevents shading and equipment damage. Good Neighbors Electric helps you evaluate your specific property during the estimate. The right system size fits your land while meeting your energy goals.

Ground mounted solar costs depend on system size, equipment selection, and site conditions. The cost per kilowatt typically runs higher than roof mounts due to the foundation work and additional electrical infrastructure. Federal tax credits, state incentives, and utility programs reduce the net cost significantly. We provide a detailed estimate after evaluating your site and energy needs.

Site conditions affect cost significantly. Level sites with good soil conditions are the most affordable. Rocky soil, sloped terrain, and remote locations add cost due to specialized foundation work or longer conductor runs. Tree clearing and grading, when needed, are additional considerations. We provide honest estimates that reflect your specific situation.

Financing makes solar investments practical for more families. Solar loans, leases, and power purchase agreements all offer different ownership and payment structures. Federal tax credits provide significant savings for purchased systems. We help you understand the options and how each affects total cost. The 2-year workmanship warranty applies to the electrical installation regardless of financing structure.

Standard grid-tied solar systems shut down during utility outages for safety reasons. The shutdown prevents back-feed to the utility lines, which could injure utility workers performing repairs. This is required by utility interconnection standards. Most homes with grid-tied solar lose power during outages just like homes without solar.

Battery backup systems change this picture significantly. Hybrid inverters with battery storage can continue operating during outages, providing power from the batteries and recharging from the solar during daylight hours. The battery sizing determines how long backup power lasts. Whole-house backup is possible with adequate battery capacity, while partial-load backup uses less battery for reduced cost.

The decision to add battery backup depends on outage frequency, critical loads, and budget. Frequent or extended outages favor battery investment. Critical medical equipment or work-from-home requirements increase the value of backup power. Good Neighbors Electric helps you evaluate the trade-offs during planning. The right configuration matches your priorities.

Ground mount installations typically take one to three weeks from start to finish. The timeline includes site preparation, foundation installation, mounting structure assembly, panel installation, electrical work, and commissioning. Weather affects scheduling, especially for foundation work. We coordinate the various trades involved to keep the project moving efficiently.

Permitting and utility approval timelines fall outside the actual construction work. The permit process typically takes a few weeks, depending on jurisdiction workload. Utility interconnection approval can take longer, especially for larger systems. We handle the paperwork and coordinate timing to minimize delays in production startup.

The actual electrical work, including wiring, inverter installation, and interconnection, typically takes a few days within the larger project timeline. We arrive prepared with the materials needed and coordinate with other trades to keep work flowing. Good Neighbors Electric handles the entire electrical scope so you have minimal stress during the project.

Yes, ground mounted solar systems require permits in Atascadero and across San Luis Obispo County. Both electrical and structural permits typically apply, depending on the specific installation. Inspections verify code compliance, which protects insurance and supports utility interconnection approval. Skipping permits creates serious problems with insurance, financing, and utility approval.

Good Neighbors Electric handles the electrical permit process as part of every installation. Structural permits for the mounting system foundations may involve other trades depending on the project structure. The customer experience is straightforward, with coordination happening behind the scenes. The inspection records become part of your home’s permanent documentation.

Utility interconnection has its own approval process beyond permits. PG&E reviews each application for grid-tied systems and approves the interconnection before commissioning. The application process can take several weeks. We handle the application and coordinate with utility timelines. Good Neighbors Electric makes the entire process manageable.

Solar savings depend on your current electric bill, system size, and utility rates. Homes with high electricity use see larger absolute savings, while the percentage savings can be similar across different bill sizes. PG&E rate structures, including time-of-use pricing, affect how solar production translates to bill savings. The savings typically increase over time as utility rates rise.

Net metering policies determine how excess production is credited. California’s current net metering program credits excess production at retail rates during the period the energy is generated, with annual true-ups balancing the account. The credits offset evening and overnight consumption when solar is not producing. Battery storage can shift production to high-rate periods for greater savings under time-of-use rates.

Production estimates during planning help set savings expectations. We provide expected first-year production based on your specific site and equipment. Actual production varies with weather, system performance, and equipment longevity. Good Neighbors Electric installs systems that perform as designed for decades, supporting long-term savings. The investment pays off through reduced electricity bills over the system life.

Ground mount maintenance is generally minimal but ongoing. Annual visual inspections check for damage, vegetation growth, and equipment condition. Panel cleaning may be needed periodically depending on dust and debris levels. Atascadero’s seasonal patterns mean winter rain helps with cleaning, while summer months may benefit from occasional washing for maximum production.

Equipment maintenance affects long-term performance. Inverters typically have 10 to 25-year warranties depending on type, with replacement expected during the system life. Panels have 25-year performance warranties from major manufacturers, with output declining slowly over time. Mounting systems and electrical equipment generally last the system life with minimal attention.

Monitoring systems make maintenance easier by alerting you to performance issues. Reduced production or equipment failures show up in the monitoring app, allowing prompt response. Some monitoring systems include automated alerts that notify the installer of issues. Good Neighbors Electric configures monitoring during commissioning and provides guidance on ongoing maintenance. The investment in proper installation supports many years of reliable production.
