I had to call for an electrician this afternoon as we had the power going off in several rooms of the house. I was given Anthony Orozco's card from another business who happened to be here. Anthony got back with me right away and within 20 minutes he was at my house. It was Friday and after 2pm. He had to replace a circuit breaker in one of our panels. I was so impressed that he was able to come out on a Friday afternoon, complete the work, and be so professional and courteous. I will definitely recommend Good Neighbors Electric to everyone.

I called Good Neighbor Electric in the morning to get a quote for the insulation of my Electric Vehicle (EV)charger. My EV charger requires a 100 AMP circuit and I wasn’t sure if my panel had the capacity for it. Anthony came out to the house that afternoon to check out the electrical panel, EV charger, and site. I received a quote the next day. After obtaining competitive quotes from other companies I found Good Neighbor Electric to be the best price. We scheduled the installation for the following week. Anthony’s people showed up on time and were very professional and courteous. During the installation Anthony came out to inspect and oversee the job. I couldn’t be happier with the installation, my charger looks good on the wall and is working flawlessly. I highly recommend Good Neighbor Electric for your electrical needs and I will be using them in the future.

Needed Tony to help me out with a remodel of my sister's medical office in SLO. We had our time line pushed up and I needed 50 data drops pulled by tomorrow, before insulation and drywall started. Tony got his crew together and saved the day! He ran ~3k' of Cat6 in two trips. Time was of the essence but he still managed to make it neat and presentable. We couldn't be happier with Good Neighbors Electric!

Tony, Skyler, Eli, and Adam were phenomenal! Setting up a big, new 200 Amp panel to replace an ancient 50 Amp panel, and all that goes with that for a 70-year old house, whew!! The team is happy, fast, upbeat, and creative. I believe there's nothing they can't do! New she-shed wired up, garage tricked out, and house safe and sound, thank you Tony and team, you are a wonderful group, we enjoyed every minute. And that's saying a lot when it comes to construction! To top it off, Good Neighbors Electric quoted a very fair price, arranged permitting and inspections, and went the extra mile to accommodate last minute ideas. 😊 Thank you, thank you, we will wholeheartedly refer you to everyone!

I can not say enough good things about this company! Absolutely incredible service, communication, and the work was amazing! The crew came out, replaced my 1965 electric box. They did the permit, they fixed the stucco after pulling the old box out. I would use them over any other electrician out there!

Anthony and his crew were amazing! First of all, he was able to come over the same day I contacted him to see the job and get started on a quote. I’d been given the runaround from other companies, so working with Anthony was like a sweet relief. Job was finished perfectly the following week & they even fixed a couple extra switches that were wired funky by a previous electrician. I will definitely be calling Good Neighbors Electric for all my future needs and recommending them to everyone I know! Thanks again guys!

Our Garage Wiring Service in Atascadero, CA

Garage wiring planning starts with understanding how you use the space. Vehicle storage with occasional projects has different needs than a full workshop with serious power tools. Hobby spaces, home offices, and converted living areas each have specific electrical requirements. We discuss your goals during the estimate so the wiring supports them. Future plans matter too, since wiring during initial work is much cheaper than retrofitting later.

Lighting is a fundamental part of garage wiring. General lighting should provide enough illumination for safe movement and basic tasks. Task lighting at workbenches, vehicle service areas, and storage spots adds focused light where needed. LED fixtures provide bright, energy-efficient lighting with long service life. We design lighting to eliminate dark corners and provide good color rendering for tasks like vehicle work or fine detail projects.

Outlet placement affects daily usability significantly. Code requires GFCI-protected outlets at specific intervals along garage walls. Beyond the minimum, additional outlets at workbenches, vehicle parking areas, and other use points make daily activities easier. Ceiling outlets work well for garage door openers and pull-down work lights. We place outlets where you actually need power, with quantities that prevent dependence on extension cords.

Dedicated circuits serve major loads and prevent nuisance breaker trips. Power tools, air compressors, welders, and EV chargers all benefit from dedicated circuits sized for their specific loads. Refrigerators and freezers in the garage need dedicated outlets to avoid sharing circuits with other loads. We identify the loads that justify dedicated circuits and install them as part of the project.

GFCI protection is required throughout garages under current code. The protection guards against shock hazards in this environment where moisture and damp conditions are common. GFCI outlets at the first device on each circuit protect downstream outlets, which is the most cost-effective approach. GFCI breakers at the panel provide whole-circuit protection in a single device. We install whichever approach fits the situation best.

240-volt circuits support shop equipment and EV chargers. Welders, large air compressors, table saws, and other major tools often run on 240 volts for efficient operation. EV chargers represent the most common 240-volt load in modern garages. We install these circuits with proper conductor sizing, breaker protection, and outlet types. Each circuit gets the attention to detail that supports reliable equipment operation.

Detached garages have additional considerations. The feeder from the main panel to a detached garage subpanel must be sized for the loads. Buried conductors need proper depth and protection. Grounding electrodes at the detached structure provide local grounding for the equipment. Bonds to other metal systems at the structure round out the grounding. We handle all of these details for detached garage projects.

Final inspection and testing verify the work is correct. Each circuit is energized and tested for proper polarity, grounding, and operation. GFCI protection is verified using built-in test buttons. Lighting controls are checked for proper operation. The building inspector reviews the work for code compliance. Good Neighbors Electric leaves the garage with clean wiring, finished outlets and switches, and documentation for your records.

Why Hire A Licensed Electrician For Your Garage Wiring Service

Garage wiring involves specific code requirements that most DIY installations miss. The required GFCI protection, AFCI requirements for converted spaces, and outlet placement rules all matter for safety and compliance. Licensed electricians understand these requirements and how to install systems that meet them. We carry insurance that protects you if something goes wrong on the job. Our work meets the California Electrical Code, which protects your homeowner’s insurance and home value. Good Neighbors Electric brings field experience to every garage project. Anthony Orozco trains every electrician on the details that matter for garage installations. You get a 2-year workmanship warranty, a waived dispatch fee when you proceed, and a team that respects your home throughout the project. Improper garage wiring causes fires, electrocutions, and code violations that affect home insurance and resale. Professional installation is the right path for any significant electrical work.

Most Common Garage Wiring Questions

Garage wiring supports lighting, outlets, EV chargers, shop equipment, and other electrical needs in this versatile space. Below are the questions Atascadero homeowners ask most often before scheduling service.

Garage wiring costs depend on the scope, the existing infrastructure, and the specific equipment needs. Adding a few outlets to an existing garage with adequate panel capacity is relatively affordable. Comprehensive garage wiring with new circuits, lighting, and specialty connections costs more due to the materials and labor. Detached garage wiring with feeders and subpanels represents the largest projects. We provide a written estimate after evaluating your specific situation.

The condition of the existing wiring affects cost significantly. Garages with adequate existing infrastructure may need only minor additions. Older garages with insufficient wiring may need comprehensive updates to meet current code. Converted spaces have different requirements than typical garages, especially if they will function as living areas. Each project gets a tailored approach based on what is actually needed.

Financing makes garage projects practical for more situations. Spreading the cost over manageable payments preserves your budget for tools, equipment, or vehicle purchases. We discuss financing during the estimate. The dispatch fee is waived when you proceed, and the 2-year workmanship warranty applies to every installation. Good Neighbors Electric is committed to fair pricing on garage projects.

Code requires at least one GFCI-protected outlet for each car space in a garage. Practical use typically calls for more outlets than the minimum, with placement that supports actual activities. Workbench areas need multiple outlets within easy reach. Areas where appliances might sit, like refrigerators or freezers, need their own outlets. Door areas benefit from outlets for vacuums and other portable equipment.

GFCI protection is required on all garage outlets. The protection can come from GFCI outlets at each location or from GFCI breakers at the panel. GFCI outlets at the first device on each circuit protect downstream outlets, which is cost-effective. We install whichever approach fits your specific situation.

240-volt outlets support shop equipment and EV chargers. NEMA 14-50 outlets provide flexibility for various loads, while dedicated hardwired connections work for specific equipment. The right outlet types depend on what you plan to use. Good Neighbors Electric helps you plan outlet placement and types during the estimate.

The right circuit count depends on the planned use of the garage. A basic garage with general outlets and lighting may need only one or two circuits beyond the lights. A workshop with serious power tools needs multiple dedicated circuits. EV charging adds another dedicated circuit. Refrigerators or freezers need their own circuits to avoid sharing with other loads.

General-purpose outlet circuits typically support several outlets each, sized at 20 amps for adequate capacity. Dedicated circuits go to specific equipment, with sizing that matches the equipment requirements. Lighting often gets its own circuit so a tool overload does not leave you in the dark. Specialty equipment like welders or compressors needs circuits sized to the equipment specifications.

Future expansion deserves consideration during the planning. Adding circuits to a panel with adequate space is straightforward, but full panels limit options. We discuss future plans during the estimate so the initial wiring supports likely additions. Good Neighbors Electric helps you plan a system that meets current needs and supports future growth.

Garage lighting installations are common projects that we handle regularly. The right lighting depends on how the garage is used. General lighting from ceiling fixtures provides overall illumination for movement and basic tasks. Task lighting at workbenches, vehicle service areas, and other specific spots adds focused light where needed.

LED fixtures are the standard for new garage lighting installations. They provide bright, energy-efficient illumination with long service life. Modern LED shop lights offer excellent color rendering for tasks like vehicle work or fine detail projects. Smart lighting with motion sensors adds convenience by automatically lighting the garage when you enter.

Switch placement affects daily usability. Switches at all entrances let you control lights regardless of which door you use. Three-way switching between the house entrance and the garage door entrance is common for convenience. We plan switch locations during the estimate so daily use is easy. Good Neighbors Electric handles every aspect of garage lighting installation.

Yes, most garage wiring work requires a permit in Atascadero. New circuits, panel modifications, and significant additions all require permits under the California Electrical Code. Inspections verify code compliance, which protects insurance and home value. Skipping the permit creates problems with insurance claims, home sales, and future electrical work.

Good Neighbors Electric handles the permit process as part of every project that requires one. We pull the paperwork, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector on site. The customer experience is straightforward, with no paperwork burden on you. The inspection record becomes part of your home’s permanent documentation.

The permit fee is a small percentage of the total project cost. Insurance claims have been denied for fires linked to unpermitted electrical work. Home sales have been complicated by unpermitted modifications. We have seen these situations and we know how to avoid them. Good Neighbors Electric does the work the right way, with documentation that protects your investment.

Yes, running power to detached garages is a common project. The work involves installing a feeder from the main panel to a subpanel at the detached structure. The feeder size depends on the planned loads at the garage, with most installations using 50 to 100-amp feeders. Underground cable in conduit or direct burial cable provides the path between buildings.

Trenching is part of most detached garage projects. The trench depth depends on the cable type, with code requirements ranging from 18 to 24 inches for residential applications. We coordinate the trenching with the rest of the work, often handling the excavation ourselves for smaller projects. Larger trenches may involve dedicated excavation equipment.

The detached garage subpanel needs proper grounding electrodes at the structure itself. Ground rods at the garage provide local grounding, supplementing the equipment grounding conductor in the feeder. Bonds to any metal systems at the garage round out the grounding. Good Neighbors Electric handles all of these details for detached garage projects. The result is a properly powered structure with code-compliant grounding.

Workshop wiring requires more capacity than typical garage wiring. Multiple dedicated circuits support different equipment without nuisance trips. 240-volt circuits accommodate larger tools like table saws, welders, and air compressors. The total electrical demand often justifies a subpanel in the garage, especially for serious shops.

Outlet placement supports the workflow. Workbenches need outlets at multiple points along their length. Standalone tools need outlets at their locations. Ceiling outlets serve hanging work lights and overhead tools. The goal is to eliminate dependence on extension cords, which create trip hazards and limit tool placement.

Lighting deserves special attention in workshops. Quality task lighting at work areas reduces eye strain and improves accuracy. Color-correct LED fixtures help when finishing or inspecting work. Multiple light circuits let you choose appropriate illumination for different tasks. Good Neighbors Electric helps you plan a workshop layout that supports productive work. The investment in proper wiring pays off in daily use.

Most garage wiring projects complete in one to three days, depending on the scope. Adding a few outlets or installing a single dedicated circuit can be done in a single day. Comprehensive garage wiring projects with multiple circuits, lighting, and panel work take longer. Detached garage projects with trenching and subpanel installation may extend to a week.

The condition of the wall finish affects the timeline significantly. Open-framed garages with no drywall allow fast wiring installation. Finished garages require fishing cables through walls and ceilings, which takes more time. Some homeowners take advantage of garage projects to add or remove drywall, which affects the schedule. We discuss these factors during the estimate.

Inspection scheduling fits into the project timeline. Most building departments inspect within a few days of request. We coordinate inspections to minimize delays in completing your project. Good Neighbors Electric handles the entire process so you have minimal stress about scheduling.
